This short story follows a fox who has learned to read and write English as a result of lying outside a bedroom window and listening to a mother read stories to her children. Since the fox, known as Fox 8, is also writing the tale, there are misspellings throughout. This can take a little bit of getting used to, but ultimately does make the writing feel more believable, at least as much as can be expected. Fox 8 ultimately discovers a mall with his friend Fox 7, where they revel in what humanity has accomplished, though things take a dark turn as they encounter some of the worst that people have to offer. Over these few dozen pages the story deftly switches between being sweet, funny, exciting, and sad and by the end you will feel like you really got to know Fox 8 and will only hope that we as a species will at least try to do better by him and the rest of Earth’s creatures. ★★★★★ – Sean Farrell
