Whats New at the Library – April

Hello Patrons! We have a lot of exciting new stuff coming your way! In addition to our new fiction and non-fiction selections, we have a number of interesting classes and events lined up for April. You can check them out below!

 

Just Released Films Presents – August Osage County: A look at the lives of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose paths have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Oklahoma house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. Snack bags and beverages will be served.


 

Just Released Films OSCAR SERIES Presents – Philomena: A world-weary political journalist picks up the story of a woman’s search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent. Snack bags and beverages will be served.


 

 

Fine Art Workshop – The Portraiture of Earth Tones: Local artist Victoria Papale will instruct on how to draw and paint the human face in this one-day workshop. Victoria will give a brief talk about the history of earth tones. She will provide pictures of faces for students to choose from and will demonstrate how to properly sketch a face on drawing paper. She will also show how to blend the colors and begin a portrait in paints. Each student will be given attention during the workshop.

Participants will need to bring the following supplies: A canvas or canvas board (minimum size 11″ x 14″, maximize size 12″ x 16″) four tubes of color: white, black, burnt sienna, and yellow ochre, paint rag, a flat brush for oils- about an inch wide- (wash brush), a small filbert, and a medium angle brush. Also needed: linseed oil for medium, odorless turps for brush cleaning, a sketch pad, 2B pencil and kneaded eraser.
Ages 16+. Registration is required. Avalon property owners may register on March 12. All others may register on March 26.

Reading Rocks!: Celebrate National Library Week! Reading Rocks is a combination of magic, comedy, books and much more. For all ages. No registration required.


Herb Gardening Lecture & Demo with Joe Alvarez: Master Gardener Joe Alvarez with be speaking about herb gardening for ornamental, culinary, and medicinal purposes in this lecture and Q&A. Different types of pots (terra cotta, plastic, hanging baskets, ornamental) and small plants will be displayed. Joe will also discuss “coastal landscapes”, the practice of adding herbs to annual and perennial beds on the barrier islands.


 

Sherlock Holmes High Tea & Documentary: Enjoy refreshments and the movie “The Secrets of Scotland Yard”. Get inside the most famous police headquarters in the world. This documentary follows police historians as they retrace the steps of some of the world’s earliest detectives, finds out how the Yard used every crime-fighting technique in its repertoire to stop the biggest heist in history, and reopens classified files to reveal how the Yard’s detective divisions continue to foil sophisticated criminal activity.
Registration is required. Avalon property owners may register March 29. All others may register April 12.
