Awards Season Movie Review: Sound of Metal

sound of metalRiz Ahmed gives an absolutely incredible performance as an ex-addict rock drummer named Ruben who finds himself completely deaf, in this well-made drama from writer/director Darius Marder. As he struggles to cope with the loss, his partner gets him to check into a treatment center in a deaf community to force him to learn to live with his condition and prevent him from backsliding into substance abuse. While Riz’s acting especially stands out, the entire cast is superb. The sound design is expertly deployed to bring the viewer into Ruben’s point of view as he loses his hearing. Combined with the anguish evident on his face, it’s truly distressing to watch. Ultimately though, it’s a story about learning to love and accept yourself, no matter the difficulties life throws your way. It’s a shame that Ruben has to go through what he does to get there, but it’s good to see him do it all the same. ★★★★ – Sean Farrell
