Spring Into Summer Events Begin This Weekend

2024 sees the start of Avalon’s exciting new Spring Into Summer event lineup! Featuring an array of fun programming for all ages and interests that run all June long, this is a great way to kick off the Summer season! We’ve got the full schedule of events for you right here so you can make sure not to miss a thing!



WEEK 1: ARTS & MUSIC



FRIDAY, 5/31 @ 7PM: Paul Green Rock Academy Concert. Surfside Park.

Led by master teacher and original founder of School of Rock Paul Green, PGRA is an advanced touring ensemble of young musicians between the ages of 10 and 18, who have been selected for their musical prowess, showmanship, love of performing, and ability to share the stage with professional musicians as they tour the world.


6/1-6/30: Avalon Historical Society Photography Contest Exhibit. Avalon History Center.

The entrants and winners of the Avalon Historical Society Photo Contest will be on display at the Avalon History Center all month long. Make sure to stop by and admire the work of your talented fellow Avalonians.


SATURDAY, 6/1 @ 10AM-4PM: Art on Dune. Dune Drive Businesses.

Features the works of talented artists across a variety of mediums on display in the boutiques of Avalon’s business district. A map of participating vendors can be found here and a preview of the artists can be found here.


SATURDAY, 6/1 @ 10AM-12PM: Local Author Fair. Avalon Elementary School Field.

The Avalon Free Public Library is excited to host our first ever Local Author Fair on Saturday June 1st from 10am to 12pm in the Avalon Elementary School field adjacent to the library. Dozens of talented area writers will be on hand for meet and greets, and signed copies of their books will be available for cash purchase. Stop by and find a new favorite book with a local connection at this free event!


SATURDAY, 6/1 @ 2PM: Fishing Lecture. Avalon Free Public Library.

Captain Barrett Francis returns to the library on June 1st at 2pm for another of his popular fishing lectures. He will discuss local fishery topics like when and where to fish, tides, habits, baits, and rigs that will help you make the most of the fishing season.



WEEK 2: EXPLORE NATURE



THURSDAY, 6/6 @ 6PM: Planning Your Day with Weather in Mind. Avalon Free Public Library.

Co-sponsored with the Environmental Commission. Planning for your fishing trip, boat outing, or beach day? There are better ways to plan for the weather than your device’s generic weather app. Learn how to find the weather answers you’re really looking for in this talk. You’ll even learn how to make a short term forecast yourself, without even using the internet.


6/7-6/13: Community Scavenger Hunt. Avalon Free Public Library, Avalon History Center, or www.avalonfreelibrary.org.

The Library and History Center are teaming up to host a community Scavenger Hunt. You will be able to pick up the clues at the Library, History Center, or online at www.avalonfreelibrary.org, then head into town and capture your answers by taking a picture. Once you’ve got them all, stop by and show them to us no later than the 13th and you will be entered to win a basket of Avalon Library goodies!


SATURDAY, 6/8 @ 10AM-3PM. Garden Club Flower Show. Avalon Community Hall.

For the group’s 40th annual flower show, the theme is “Here Comes the Summer.” Admission is free and the winners will be determined by public vote. More information can be found here.


FRIDAY, 6/14 @ 2:30PM. Landscape Design with Pollinators & Birds in Mind. 39th Street Tennis Building.

Co-sponsored with the Environmental Commission. This indoor workshop will be taught by Pat Sutton (educator, author, and long-time wildlife gardener). The first half of the workshop will cover resources and a slide program about the topic. During the second half of the workshop the group will brainstorm the projected images of each participant’s rough sketch. This brainstorming session should result in participants heading home with ideas and plans to enhance each of their properties for pollinators and birds. WEEK 3: FAMILY FUN



SATURDAY, 6/15 @ 10AM. Sand Sculpture Demo. Beach at Surfside Park.

Artist Brendan Schaffer will create a sand sculpture on the beach behind Surfside Park for all to see!


SATURDAY, 6/15 @ 1PM. Sand Sculpture Class. Beach at Surfside Park.

Brendan Schaffer returns to teach sand sculpting. In this one-hour beginner class, you will learn the basics of the art! Registration is required. Limited to 10 families (up to 4 people per family group). To register, please call the library at 609-967-7155 or stop by the circulation desk.


SATURDAY, 6/15 @ 3PM. Celebrating the Philadelphia Flyers’ 1974 Championship Victory with Flyers Meet & Greet. Surfside Park.

An exciting afternoon celebrating the Philadelphia Flyers’ 1974 Championship Victory. Bring your lawn chairs to sit and hear from the greats followed by a meet and greet with players that donned jerseys during the historic championship run. Attendees have a chance to receive a signed commemorative photo. Player lineup is subject to change. In case of inclement weather, this event will be moved into Community Hall.



WEEK 4: SUMMER SOLSTICE



THURSDAY, 6/20 @ 11AM. Horseshoe Crabs: Living Fossils at the Beach. Avalon Free Public Library.

Co-Sponsored with the Environmental Commission. Every spring at the shore our beaches get visited by a living fossil- the Horseshoe Crab! At this presentation, we’ll meet and learn all about the Horseshoe Crab, discuss why so many animals rely on them to survive (including humans) and the research and conservation efforts at The Wetlands Institute. This is an all-ages event.


THURSDAY, 6/20 @ 7PM. Concerts at Surfside: Sensational Soul Cruisers. Surfside Park.

Bring your beach chairs and enjoy the music of The Sensational Soul Cruisers. Concert will move indoors to Community Hall in the event of inclement weather.


FRIDAY, 6/21 @ 1PM-4PM. Avalon Historical Society Olde House Tour. Avalon History Center.

Experience the tradition and beauty of several of Avalon’s old homes during the Avalon Historical Society’s Olde House Tour. The tour is a ticketed self-guided event. Call 609-967-0090 for more event and ticket details. In person ticket sales available onsite at the History Center on June 21, starting at 10am.


FRIDAY, 6/21 @ 7:30PM. Celebrating Summer: A Solstice Beachwalk. Avalon Community Hall.

After a brief presentation inside Community Hall, attendees will be lead on a stroll along the beach to ponder about the ways the planet and its wildlife move through the seasons. Sponsored by the Avalon Environmental Commission.


SATURDAY, 6/22 @ 8:30AM. AHLOA Community Connections. Avalon Community Hall.

This annual event hosted by AHLOA enables Avalon property owners to meet with many Borough, County, and local non-profit organizations. Representatives will be on hand to answer questions and provide free information materials and other giveaways. There will also be a presentation by this year’s featured guest speaker, Dr. Lenore Tedesco, Executive Director of The Wetlands Institute. Light refreshments will be provided.


SATURDAY, 6/22 @ 5PM. Summer Solstice Festival. Surfside Park.

After a fun day at the beach, gather at Surfside Park for to keep things going at this event featuring activities for the kids and a variety of food vendors.


SATURDAY, 6/22 @ 6:30PM. Still Surfin’: A Beach Boys Tribute. Surfside Park.

A special concert for the Borough of Avalon’s Summer Solstice Festival. Bring your beach chairs and enjoy the music of Still Surfin’: A Beach Boys Tribute. Concert will move indoors to Community Hall in the event of inclement weather.
