Exciting Events at the Library in June!

Summer is finally here and we have lots of great events planned to keep you entertained and informed all season long! Be sure to mark your calendars for the Annual Story Book Bash, a visit by the OverDrive Digital Bookmobile, new exhibits, walking tours and more! The Library will also begin offering extended hours staring June 28 as Monday through Friday, 9am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 9am to 5pm. We’ve highlighted some of our biggest June events below, but you can see a full calendar of everything we have planned at the library and the Avalon History Center at http://www.avalonfreelibrary.org.


Thursday, June 6 / 10am-4pm

Digital Bookmobile Visits the Library!

10Representatives from Overdrive will be visiting the library with their Digital Bookmobile! Just come on by with or without your favorite device and learn all about the incredible content available online via Overdrive and Libby and how to get them on your phone, tablet, or e-reader. No experience or registration required, just pop in when convenient!


Saturday, June 15 / 1-4pm

“Early Avalon” Exhibit Opening & Avalon Historical Society Olde House Tour

11Experience the tradition of the Avalon Historical Society’s Olde House Tour in which visitors will be able to see several of Avalon’s oldest homes. As a special addition this year, attendees will be treated to light refreshments at the History Center as we premiere the brand new “Early Avalon” exhibits. These will feature sections on historic homes, the railroad, and Avalon’s hotels. The reception is free and open to the public, but tickets are required for the tour, and can be obtained at the History Center.

Avalon Dune & Beach Walk

12Everyone likes to visit the beach, but what do you know about the plants and animals that live there? Meet at 48th Street and Dune Drive in Avalon for an interpretive walk with a naturalist along the maritime forest and dune trails to learn about the flora and fauna that call this area their home. Presented by the Wetlands Institute and proudly sponsored by the Avalon Free Public Library.

Paper Peddler Trivia Night

13Do you think you know your Avalon trivia? Well put together a team of friends and show us just how knowledgeable you are in our annual Quizzo-inspired trivia game! Prizes will be awarded to the winning teams. Call 609-967-0090 to reserve a table for your team of up to 4 people. This event will take place at the Avalon History Center.

Annual Story Book Bash

14Join us for a fun-filled family friendly event will include kids’ performers, story times, face painting, an Artbar, giveaways, and more!


Wednesday, June 26 / 6pm

Documentary Film: “Standing in the Shadows of Motown”

15This acclaimed 2002 documentary, directed by Paul Justman and starring Joe Hunter, Jack Ashford and Uriel Jones is the story of the Funk Brothers, a group of Detroit musicians who backed up dozens of Motown artists. Enjoy the screening then plan to join us for live Motown music on July 12 when we host “Shadows of the Sixties.” Rated PG for Thematic Elements.
