The FBI has put out a warning about a recent rise in text message scams claiming that the recipient owes unpaid toll money to their state’s highway authority, as pictured below. These reportedly first started appearing in March of 2024 and since then over 2,000 complaints have been filed with the Bureau, with many coming from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Earlier this month the New Jersey Turnpike Authority sent a warning to drivers alerting them to the scam.
To avoid being scammed it is advised that recipients immediately delete the text message upon receiving it. Most importantly, do not click on the link it contains and do not provide any information to the sender. If you do owe any toll money in New Jersey, you will be contacted via mail, and can make payments on the New Jersey E-ZPass site here: https://www.ezpassnj.com/vector/violations/violationInquiry.do.
