Author Talk with Meg Donohue

The author of beloved hits like the Avalon-set All the Summer Girls, How to Eat a Cupcake, Dog Crazy, and her latest, The Memory Gardener, Meg Donohue will be joining us here in Avalon at Surfside Park at 7pm on Monday the 27th! Grab a blanket or a beach chair and head over to hear her talk about her books, her experiences visiting Avalon each Summer, and more, and then stick around afterwards for a Q&A and book signing! Don’t worry if you left your copy at home as books will be available to purchase at the event! – Sean Farrell

The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett

If you’re looking for a new book for your next beach day, I recommend The Calamity Club. Kathryn Stockett has a gift for creating characters you want to know better, and you can’t help but root for. The book intertwines two stories in Mississippi in the 1930s. There’s a lot going on (it’s not short!) but ultimately, is about a group of women attempting to take control of their lives at a time when doing so was nearly impossible. It’s complicated, funny, and sad, and you’ll fly through it wanting to learn how things play out for the characters. I’ll admit, like Sean, I was looking for a bit more at the end, but that doesn’t change how much I enjoyed getting to know these characters. – Erin Brown

The East Palace

Blending mystery, palace intrigue, and thrilling martial arts set pieces into a dark fantasy / horror epic set in a fictionalized version of South Korea’s Joseon dynasty, this seemingly unwieldy mélange of genres and tones shouldn’t work, but it might actually be one the most entertaining and interesting shows on TV right now. Well-acted and gorgeously shot, even the slower moments are impossible to look away from. With the added dash of enemies-to-lovers romcom this series really has something for everyone. – SF

The G’s Spot

This little spot is in its second season tucked behind Circle Pizza and if you haven’t been, I recommend you check it out. The egg pocket and coffee are great, as are the burgers! There’s a breezy patio to enjoy your food, or take it to go. – EB
