Happy Friday everyone! It looks like snow is in the forecast for this weekend, though there is a chance that a prolonged period of rain will make the end result somewhat negligible here in Avalon. Whether the storm pans out for us or not, we’re still in for a stretch of cold weather, which means you might be in need of some recommendations to keep entertained while being stuck indoors. Bookish
This charming British mystery series is impossible to resist. Starring and created by Mark Gatiss (who also co-created the recent Sherlock adaptation), it follows Gabriel Book, who operates a bookstore but seems more engaged in solving mysteries with his wife Trottie (Polly Walker), his new employee Jack (Connor Finch), neighboring shopkeeper Nora (Buket Kömür), and local Inspector Bliss (Elliot Levey). The mysteries themselves are well-plotted, the cast is delightful, and the banter is impeccably witty. Fans of this kind of show will eat it up. – Sean Farrell
Little Lunch
My 9-year-old, 7-year-old, and I just started watching Little Lunch on Netflix. It’s an Australian show that’s very much a family-friendly version of The Office but takes place on a school yard during recess. It’s a refreshing break from watching my kids viewing random YouTube shorts and it’s snappy enough to keep their attention. The kids are quirky but not bratty; they interact in very real ways but without any malice. It’s just plain good fun to watch. – Shannon Nagle
Wreck by Catherine Newman
Continues the story of middle age in the sandwich generation, which was started in the book Sandwich (named for the town in Connecticut, but I finally figured out the double meaning). What I love about Catherine Newman’s writing is that it feels like reading a long letter from my sister, with jokes and stream of consciousness, and so well written. This is also a pretty quick book, the audiobook is only 5 1/2 hours, making it a perfect weekend read. – Mary Ecklund
locket by Madison Beer
The third LP from singer Beer is another collection of dreamy pop tunes with tinges of electronica. With lovely arrangements complimenting her mellifluous vocals, the entire record makes for a smoothly satisfying listen. – SF
As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes & Joe Layden
If you’ve been lightly (or deeply) obsessed with The Princess Bride like me, I highly recommend As You Wish! Anyone interested in how movies are made, behind the scenes workings, and personal accounts of this specific film will enjoy Elwes’ writing. I highly recommend the audiobook specifically – Cary Elwes’ reading is soothing and personable, and others who contributed to the film read their excerpts from the book, making it feel like a gathering of friends recounting their wonderful time together. – ME
