Campers around a bonfire at dusk

The Weekly Wow List: 10/16/26

Spooky Season continues and we’ve got more scares for you! But the week’s most promising release might not be scary at all….

Two women engaged in an intense conversation indoors, focusing on each other with a warm, vintage setting in the background.

Georgia Oakley, whose only previous directing credit was the 2023 indie Blue Jean, steps up to take the helm of Focus Features’ latest adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved Sense and Sensibility. Critics have taken mostly favorably to it so far, even if it doesn’t look like it will become the top version of the story, and it’s always nice to see this kind of movie in theaters, so don’t miss out on your chance. – Sean Farrell

A young man with short hair is looking off to the side, wearing a wetsuit and gear for diving or surfing, against a cloudy sky.

Co-written by Daniel Kraus and based on his thrilling novel of the same name, the latest by director Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You) follows a young man played by Austin Abrams who gets swallowed by a sperm whale and must fight to escape digestion. If the movie manages to balance the line between nail-biting suspense and emotional flashbacks that the book pulled off so well, this could be one of the year’s most memorable thrillers. – SF

It’s been too long since any member of the Voorhees family graced our screens. Legal battles over the rights have keep Jason and his mom Pamela in stasis since the somewhat sloppy but still entertaining 2009 reboot. Well, the court case is apparently settled and A24โ€”usually known for their prestige effortsโ€”is taking us back to Crystal Lake, where we watch how Jason’s (Callum Vinson) drowning drives his mother (Linda Cardellini) to madness. That a shadowy organization appears to be after her certainly won’t help her mental state. The entire series is available and now and while it seems likely to upset fans too married to the established lore, creator Brad Kane (It: Welcome to Derry) seems to be doing a good job of pulling a rich story out of the somewhat thin original. We’ll see how I feel once I reach the end, but so far I’m surprisingly impressed. – SF
