Microsoft has been dramatically changing its Windows platform to keep up with the times since the late 90s. With old rivals like Apple and new giants like Google, Amazon, and Facebook, Microsoft has found it difficult to stay on the cutting edge of technology.

More recently, Microsoft released the popular Windows 7 and less popular Windows 8 operating systems. Windows 7 was their OS which was optimized for computers with a mouse and keyboard where as Windows 8 was catered to more touch friendly devices. On October 1st, Microsoft debuted its newest installment of Windows: Windows 10. According to Joe Belfiore (VP of OS Development), Windows 10 will be the operating system which will be able to seamlessly transition from a computer desktop to a mobile OS depending on the hardware you are using. For example, the keyboard on the Microsoft Surface is detachable. When the keyboard is attached to the Surface, it would be in “Desktop” mode. All apps would function as if they were desktop applications. When the keyboard becomes detached from the Surface, the OS switches to a more mobile and touch friendly user experience. Basically, Windows is in the beginning stages of building an operating system which can switch back and forth between the best of Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Microsoft also wants to build the opinion of the public into the new Windows 10. To do so, they are offering a special beta preview of the system for experienced desktop developers to test and give feedback.
