Children’s Book Review: You Matter by Christian Robinson

“When everyone is too busy to help… You matter.”

In his second solo picture book, Christian Robinson mixes paint and collage to produce his expressive illustrations. Through sparse text, Robinson clearly states that from the smallest things to the largest, everything matters.

Moving through this book quickly, because the words are few, would be missing the beauty of the pictures and all that is happening within them. Each illustration leads into the next as the story passes through various perspectives. Additional readings invite the reader to focus more intently on the images within the story’s pages.

The book does not preach. It does not use flowery language. Robinson’s cut paper illustrations wonderfully contrast the straight-forward text and, together, they take readers on a magical journey.

Robinson is the author of the wordless picture book, Another, as well as the illustrator of books, such as Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña and Little Penguins by Cynthia Rylant. ★★★★★ – Heather Burns
