After days of high heat, a wave of moisture that at one point had a slight chance of developing into a tropical storm off the coast of the southeastern United States washed over our region throughout the day on Friday. The system brought sustained torrential rains to much of the area along with thunder and lightning.
Parts of our area received over 3″ of rain, though this time around it looks like Avalon lucked out, averaging only around a quarter of an inch. The rain caused street flooding in other local communities and led to heavy congestion on area roadways. Power was knocked out for much of the early afternoon in portions of North Cape May. There are reports of numerous buildings in Cape May being struck by lightning, including Cape May City Hall, where the damage is still being assessed.
The chance of rain remains with us throughout the morning and the system is expected to exit the region around lunchtime. Cape May County has technically been approaching drought conditions for the year, though the dry ground means that not much of the rainfall will have been absorbed, so it is unclear how much difference the storm will have made in that regard.
