The Weekly Wow List: 1/16/26

Is there anyone that doesn’t like Fridays? Probably, but they’re crazy. Here’s another round up of staff picks for you to enjoy as you head into the weekend! Let us know what you’ll be doing in the comments!

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

The zombiepocalypse sequel trilogy kicked off by last year’s excellent 28 Years Later picks up right where that movie left off, with Alfie Williams’ young Spike and Ralph Fiennes’ Dr. Kelson wend their way back towards each other while Jack O’Connell’s Sir Jimmy Crystal spreads chaos in his wake. Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War) returns for the script, but Danny Boyle hands directing duties over to Nia DaCosta (Candyman, Hedda) whose strong visual style should make for a nice fit. Early buzz is strong for this one, so I am looking forward to seeing it. – Sean Farrell

Death by Lightning

I just finished watching Death by Lightning on Netflix and I highly recommend watching it, especially if you love historical drama. It’s a four episode limited series that is perfect for binge-watching.  The series follows the life of James A. Garfield and his rise from humble beginnings to unexpectedly being nominated and becoming the 20th President of the United States. During this journey his life collides with the dangerous and unsettling obsessions of Charles Guiteau.

Michael Shannon as Garfield plays a quiet, but morally strong character that makes the story deeply moving. While in contrast, Matthew Macfadyen, is an attention seeking, delusional character that is optimistic and charming at times. His portrayal of Guiteau draws you in within the first few minutes. The tension builds toward an inevitable, tragic ending. The powerful performances, great writing, and stunning production bring a tragic moment in American history to life.

The series is based on the book Destiny of the Republic written by Candice Millard which just happens to be this month’s Literacy Book Club choice at the Avalon Free Public Library. – Lorna Robertson

Jenny Colgan’s Kirrinfief series

Looking for a cozy read with lots of bookish charm? A patron recently checked out the first book in Jenny Colgan’s Kirrinfief series and it reminded me what a great option these titles are when you want something warm and easy to sink into – perfect for January.

It starts with The Bookshop on the Corner (2016), where Nina leaves her city job behind and opens a traveling bookshop in the Scottish Highlands. It’s all about finding community and following your passion. In The Bookshop on the Shore (2019), you meet Zoe, a single mom who lands in the Highlands after answering an ad seeking a nanny. Finally, 500 Miles from You (2020) switches things up with a job-swap between two nurses, leading to new friendships, perspective, and adventure.

All three books share the same vibe — lovable and quirky characters, charming settings, romance, and lots of books. If cozy romance set in the Scottish Highlands sounds appealing, check out this series. – Erin Brown

Eden

Eden is a survival thriller based on the true story of European settlers on a remote island in the Galapagos during the 1930s. As they face the harsh realities of a primitive lifestyle, their efforts to survive soon turn into a fierce power struggle, betrayal, and murder. This film is directed by Ron Howard and I think it’s one of his best. – Lisa Papineau

The Traitors

I am not generally a fan of reality shows (that don’t involve food anyway), but The Traitors had me hooked from the very beginning. The latest US season has just started and so far it’s full of the scheming fans have come to expect, while never forgetting to look like fun to actually play. Truly addictive entertainment. – SF

  1. Happy Friday to all. Can\’t wait to try the new restaurant in Seaville. I think I may have been there under another name. Still in Maryland. Hoping to get to Florida. Dotty Hordubay
