Take a Virtual Tour of the Old 6th St. House

As many of you may already know, one of the town’s oldest houses was recently taken apart and hauled off the island. We were fortunate enough to get a look inside this historic home at 254 6th St. before it was disassembled, and take some video to share with all of you. Built in 1895, this 3-story Victorian dwelling was originally owned by the Borough’s first tax assessor, George W. Kates. It has changed hands a few times over the ensuing years, and the land is now slated to have a new home built on it. Lucky for the house, a family that used to spend Summers there has paid to have it taken apart and moved to storage while they look for a new location. The Avalon Historical Society has funded the “virtual preservation” of the house, by having this video tour produced and by hiring an architect to create technical drawings of the structure as it existed.
