The Avalon Department of Public Works has announced that they are now offering a battery recycling program between the hours of 7am and 3pm on the third Saturday of each month at their courtesy trash / recycling station on 15th Street, just off Dune Drive. Avalon residents and property owners can bring any household single-use or rechargeable batteries for safe disposal and recycling, including lithium ion and cell phone batteries. Marine, vehicle, or e-bike batteries are not accepted, nor are damaged or recalled household batteries.
When thrown in the trash, batteries, especially the lithium-based kind found in many rechargeable electronic devices, can set off dangerous fires and / or pose an environmental contamination risk. Many Americans dispose of these items in their regular trash, which has led to an increase in fires at recycling centers, waste facilities, and in garbage trucks that has caused millions of dollars in damage, often at taxpayer expense, and has put countless lives in danger. By disposing of these batteries responsibly we can all do our part to help keep each other safe and protect our environment.
