November’s first batch of Staff Picks is filled with books, plus a new movie in theaters and an engaging cozy game!

Threshing Day by Rebecca Yarros

I was disappointed by Onyx Storm, the third book in the Empyrean series, but this collection of short stories brought me back in. Each chapter is a different character’s story of meeting their dragon for the first time, and gives a little insight into their thoughts and motives in the story. Since we rarely are treated to other character’s thoughts outside of Violet, this is a refreshing insight in the series. This contains spoilers for books 2 and 3, so read after you’re caught up. – Kara Buono

Godzilla Minus Zero

Writer / director Takashi Yamazaki returns to helm this follow-up to his sensational Godzilla Minus One. Taking place two years after the events of that film, the Shikishima family is once again forced to face a kaiju catastrophe when Godzilla returns, this time accompanied by the ferocious Ghidorah. – Sean Farrell

Grim Tidings by B.K. Borison

This is the second in the Ghosted series, but can be read as a standalone. What happens when a grim reaper doesn’t want to ferry the dead and a guardian angel feels compelled to save her? Both are grumpy characters with a chance to show their sweet sides in this “death but make it corporate” story of star-crossed lovers. – KB

We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer

I didn’t expect much going into this one for some reason, but I was pleasantly surprised. When a couple reluctantly agrees to let a previous resident of their newly purchased, fixer upper home bring his family inside to see it, they find themselves embroiled in something beyond their understanding. With a multi-layered mystery, relentless tension, and some truly frightening moments, this metaphysical twist on the haunted house story is a blast, and makes for an interesting companion to one of my favorite books of the year, Solace House. – SF

Folded Fables: Tidy Up the Dragon Hoard

Made entirely without AI, this newest addition to the tidy up simulators sweeping the gaming community has a very cute paper dragon who has threatened to eat you if you don’t clean up their mess! With varied mechanics, and a dragon favor system not seen in other games, this is a must play for fans who like to tidy up. This is also playable with friends on Steam. – KB
