[UPDATE: 8/21/25 @ 9:45AM] The Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the waters off of Cape May County’s coast. This warning does not apply to the actual land of the county. The Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 2am Saturday, with the worst potential flooding expected with this evening’s high tide. A Wind Advisory also is in effect from 10am today until 12am Friday morning, and both a Rip Current Statement and High Surf Advisory apply until 8pm Friday. More details about what these mean can be found below.
The Avalon beaches have been closed for swimming and surfing today, until further notice. Additionally, tonight’s Thursdays at Surfside concert has been cancelled and the Library will be closing at 5pm.
[UPDATE: 8/20/25 @ 6:44AM] A Tropical Storm Warning and a Coastal Flood Warning is now in effect for our area. This means that tropical storm conditions are expected to occur.
The Tropical Storm Warning covers the waters off our coast, with winds of 25 to 35 knots with gusts up to 45 knots expected, as well as seas of 12 to 17 feet. Boating activities should be avoided as a result.
The Coastal Flood Warning, which expires at 2am on Saturday, indicates that 1 to 2 feet of water may emerge into parts of our area near the coast. During the next several high tides it is advised that residents and visitors move their vehicles to higher ground.
A Wind Advisory has also been added for Thursday from 10am to Midnight. Wind speeds of up to 35mph and gusts up to 50mph are possible during that time.

[UPDATE: 8/19/25 @ 4:10PM] A Coastal Flood Watch has now been added for our area. It will be in effect from 2pm on Thursday, August 21st through 11pm on Friday, August 22nd. According to the National Weather Service, this means that, “one to two feet of inundation above ground level possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.” In addition, “Numerous roads may be closed. Low lying property including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure may be inundated. Some shoreline erosion may occur.”

The National Weather Service has issued several alerts for Avalon and Cape May County as the effects of Hurrican Erin will begin to reach our area and combine with the high tides associated with the forthcoming new moon. The storm itself is forecast to remain out to sea, but it is still expected to cause tidal flooding along the New Jersey coastline.
There is a Coastal Flood Advisory in effect from 4pm to 10pm today, Tuesday, August 19th. Areas that are especially prone to flooding may become inundated with water during high tide, so it is advised that you move your car if you have it parked in such a location. It is also advised that drivers avoid flooded areas.
In addition, a High Surf Advisory is in effect for Wednesday from 6am through Friday at 6am, with waves forecast to reach heights of up to 11 feet on Thursday. There is also a Rip Current Statement through Wednesday at 8pm, cautioning swimmers of the increased risk, and a Small Craft Advisory that will remain in effect until Friday at 6pm, warning of heavy surf and high winds that would make navigating the waters off our coasts dangerous for inexperienced boaters and small vessels.
These alerts may be extended, changed, or cancelled at any time over the next few days, with local meteorologist Joe Martucci cautioning that some effects will be with us through Saturday. There is not expected to be any rain associated with this event, and while winds will increase, no severe threat is expected in that regard either.
