Happy Friday everyone! There’s really only one big story in pop culture this weekend, so you can guess what our first Staff Pick of the week will be. We’ve also got an upcoming author visit, a streaming docuseries, and the arrival of one of the biggest horror hits of all time at the library, so let’s check them out!

The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic promises to be one of the biggest events of the Summer. With a sprawling cast of top-tier performers and truly grand-scale filmmaking this has the makings of a modern classic and demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible. – Sean Farrell

Author Talk with Katherine Center

The New York Times bestselling author of over half a dozen books, like How to Walk Away, Things You Save in a Fire, and What You Wish For will be joining us at Surfside Park (or inside at Community Hall in the event of inclement weather) to talk about her life and work, including her latest hit novel The Shippers, a witty, heart-tugging, childhood-friends-to-lovers romance. Books will be available for purchase and a Q&A and book signing will follow her presentation. – SF

Worst Neighbor Ever

We don’t all have the best relationships with our neighbors, but after watching the horrific encounters in each of the 4 episodes of this docuseries we’ll be glad we don’t live next door to lunatics like these. So chilling and shocking it can sometimes be hard to believe, these encounters each illustrate that you never really know what’s lurking on the other side of the fence. – SF

Obsession

Now available to borrow from the library on DVD, director Curry Barker’s feature debut is one of the best horror movies of the year. In my original five-star review I said, “Obsession is a wild ride that isn’t afraid to go to dark places as it psychoanalyzes a certain type of modern man. Genuinely tense and unsettling, this is a movie you won’t soon forget.” If you are one of the few people who didn’t check it out in the theater, make sure not to miss it now. – SF
