If you love Avalon’s beaches and want to do your part to help clean and protect them, there are 2 different ways to do so this Saturday, October 19th.
The dunes play a vital role in protecting our shoreline from hurricanes and other storms throughout the year, and they need plants like dune grass to keep them in place. If you want to help plant new dune grass seedlings to keep our dunes healthy and strong, report to 30th Street outside of Avalon Community Hall by 8:30am. A brief demonstration about planting will be presented, specialized utensils will be handed out, and then volunteers will set into the dunes to get started. Lunch will be provided inside Community Hall after the planting is done. If you want to volunteer, call Chuck McDonnell at Community Hall at 609-967-3066 or Sue Keen at 609-967-5924. In the event of rain, which currently does not look very likely, the planting will take place on Sunday the 20th.
If you would prefer to help out by cleaning the beach instead, charitable organization Clean Ocean Action will be leading a beach sweep the same day, beginning at 9am, rain or shine (again, it will probably be “shine”). If you want to help out you can register at CleanOceanAction.org, just enter the site name “AVALON” and the address “30TH ST BOARDWALK”, both without quotation marks. Volunteers will need to provide their own bucket and work gloves.
