The Cape May County Bridge Commission has issued a release stating that the Townsend Inlet Bridge will be subject to overnight road closures at the start of the new year as a part of a fender replacement project for the structure.
Beginning on Monday, January 5, 2026, the bridge will shut down to vehicular traffic between the hours of 8pm and 5am. This will occur on each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night from then on until January 26, 2026, depending on weather. During these hours anyone attempting to travel between Avalon and Sea Isle City will be directed to use Avalon Boulevard, Route 9, and Sea Isle Boulevard and should anticipate needing additional travel time.
The project is focused on installing new bridge foundation pilings beneath the structure, which form the primary framing for the new fender system, which in turn will protect the bridge from vessel impacts, improving its long-term resilience.
